Meet me in the Restroom
July 2022
Meet me in the Restroom is a collection of paintings, drawings and photography, emerged from memories of the nightlife women’s restroom and flourished into an installation. In a world where not being a cis man can be quite unsafe, we – non cis men – create places of safety to find solace within each other. In these spaces we can unapologetically be ourselves. The vibe of the women’s restroom of a bar is one that’s very rare and constantly inspires my artistic practice. Meet me in the Restroom was on show at the Willem de Kooning Graduation Show in the summer of 2022.
Godsibb
November 2021
The word gossip comes from godsibb. In the 17th century, godsibb was used to describe close female friends - people you shared personal stories with. When misoginy grew as witch-hunts became more common, the word gossip acquired the negative meaning it has now: idle talk, stereotypical for women. Language, in this sense, has to be one of the most visible remains of medieval witch hunts in our current society. Words like gossip find their origin in one of the biggest and most violent gendercides of all time. As for most of my projects, this one also started out with a personal narrative. My own gossips and I experience some harsh bias when it comes to our (very) close friendship. By adding images that represent the witch-hunts to personal flash photography, I wanted to make clear the origins of these prejudices.
